On N64, if you shield drop a chu in an OoB void it will freeze the game, however letting a chu timer run out and explode by itself will act normal. In the GC version however, shield dropping a chu in a void does not freeze and actually improves hovering conditions by creating a bigger explosion. The VC version does not freeze but also doesn't create a larger explosion. There is a condition which it will freeze on GC/VC though. If there is a bombchu running in bounds and you shield drop a chu OoB it will freeze. It is currently unknown why this happens.
